Laser welding - laser welding you have to see it to believe it!

Laser welding - laser welding you have to see it to believe it!

Some time ago we attended a demonstration of laser welding. I was a bit skeptical about this because it just looks too good to be true. There are videos everywhere on YouTube with the most beautiful results that simply no TIG welder can match. (thin material 1 to 5 mm)

We had a demonstration with a machine with 1500 watts of laser power, but the machine is available in 1000 - 1500 and 2000 watts.

What have I seen?

  • superior weld quality
  • Super fast
  • well welded
  • no (expensive) material loss
  • welding was done by someone who had never welded laser before.
  • very little heat development
  • no to very little distortion
  • attach quickly
  • no welding mask but glasses
  • no special protective clothing
  • little smoke

These were the positives.

Minuses

  • Be careful with the laser gun dropping it is very bad and expensive.
  • Welding in a cabin is desirable to prevent stray laser light (invisible) but harmful to unprotected eyes.

Furthermore, despite the fact that a laser welding machine is expensive, it can quickly be recouped due to the speed gain, no material loss, much less training required and little or no adjustment work required, no discoloration and can be used for stainless steel, aluminum and steel.

All in all I'm very impressed.

As a target price for a complete 1500 watt system, including training, you can assume approximately € 30,000.

What a great device.

Please note that this video is about someone using the device for the first time.

Explanation:

  • fiber laser: welding arc energy with (laser) light, no longer with electricity
  • fiber laser technology now applied manually
  • No welding helmet required, but specific welding goggles are required
  • clear view of the welded zone and the deposited material

Advantages:

  • high travel speeds
  • Low heat input but still deep penetration
  • no structural changes in the base material or in the WBZ

Fanuci Handheld Laser

  • hardly any post-processing (cf. pickling, straightening, etc.)
  • welding stainless steel, brass, steel, aluminum, ...
  • very high quality weld seam
  • welds are stronger than with conventional processes
  • low distortion on thin materials
  • little to no splashing
  • joining thin to thick material
  • no more welding technical skills required
  • hardly any training is required for operation
  • unparalleled speed compared to 'traditional' electrical processes
  • significantly lower consumption of filler material

Applications:

  • Stainless steel, steel & aluminum up to 5mm
  • industrial kitchen construction
  • medical industry (scanners, devices, etc.)
  • gas and oil industry
  • precision welding of thin materials
  • spot welding of very thin material to thick material
  • food industry
  • swimming pools / edges in stainless steel
