Corten steel, also known under the brand name COR-TEN steel, is a metal alloy consisting of iron to which copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium have been added. The strength is comparable to that of other alloyed steel types such as stainless steel, the design value is approximately 355 N/mm².
 
Corten steel forms a very dense oxide layer that is rust-colored and therefore shields the underlying material from oxygen, which greatly slows down further oxidation. However, in cavities where water remains, rust formation continues. The name comes from: COR (corrosion resistant) TEN (tensile strength).
